IPBES-ICES Seminar

A transdisciplinary approach for biodiversity, marine ecosystems, and sustainability: IPBES and ICES perspectives

2019-09-12

The Swedish Institute for the Marine Environment co-hosts a meetings organized by Swedish Environmental Protection Agency, University of Gothenburg, and Formas.

Biodiversity is declining globally at rates unprecedented in human history — threatening ecosystem services and grave impacts on people around the world are now likely. This event will provide an opportunity to explore collaborative work between IPBES and ICES community for a transdisciplinary approach to advance our understanding of marine ecosystems and the services they provide at both regional and global scales.

More info about the seminar

The Intergovernmental Science-Policy Platform on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services (IPBES) is an intergovernmental organization established in 2012 to improve the interface between science and policy on issues of biodiversity and ecosystem services. It is often described as "the IPCC of biodiversity". The organization provides policymakers with objective scientific assessments about the state of knowledge regarding biodiversity, ecosystem services, and their contributions to human well-being, as well as tools and methods to protect and sustainably use these vital natural assets.

The International Council for the Exploration of the Sea (ICES) is an intergovernmental marine science organization, meeting societal needs for impartial evidence on the state and sustainable use of our seas and oceans. The goal is to advance and share scientific understanding of marine ecosystems and the services they provide and to use this knowledge to generate state-of-the-art advice for meeting conservation, management, and sustainability goals. ICES is a network of more than 5,000 scientists from marine institutes in more than 20 countries. Almost 150 Swedish experts participate in the network, but the knowledge in Sweden about the organisation is limited.
